R42 / SUMMARY

Peacock has greenlit a live-action Fast & Furious series and is targeting a 2028 premiere. Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman wrote the pilot and will serve as showrunners and executive producers. The plot, cast, and any on-screen role for Vin Diesel remain unconfirmed.

KEY POINTS

  1. 01The project has moved from development to an official series order at Peacock.
  2. 02The streamer is targeting 2028 but has not announced a specific release date.
  3. 03Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman wrote the pilot and will serve as showrunners and executive producers.
  4. 04Vin Diesel will produce the series, but his participation in the cast is unconfirmed.
  5. 05The three other shows Diesel mentioned in May have not received public greenlights.

Peacock has officially greenlit a live-action series based on Fast & Furious and is targeting a 2028 premiere. The order turns a project that had been in development since May into a confirmed production, following Vin Diesel's presentation of the franchise's television expansion at NBCUniversal's annual event for advertisers.

The series does not have an announced title. Mike Daniels, whose credits include Sons of Anarchy and Shades of Blue, and Wolfe Coleman, of Shades of Blue and 9-1-1: Lone Star, wrote the pilot and will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Universal Television will produce the project for the streaming service.

The announcement confirms Diesel's behind-the-scenes involvement as an executive producer alongside Sam Vincent, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Chris Morgan. That does not mean Dominic Toretto will appear in the story: its cast, characters, and plot remain under wraps. Peacock also describes 2028 as a target rather than a locked release date.

One series has been ordered, not four

At the May presentation, Diesel said Peacock would launch four productions set in the Fast & Furious universe. NBCUniversal's official material, however, identified only one scripted series in development. This week's confirmation advances that specific project. No equivalent order has been announced for the three other ideas, and treating them as commissioned shows would turn an actor's statement into a formal commitment the streamer has not made.

The shift from “in development” to “greenlit” is the central new fact. During development, a studio can work on scripts and staffing without guaranteeing that episodes will be produced. A series order means Peacock has decided to move forward, although schedules, episode counts, and scope can still change. None of those details has been disclosed.

This will also be the franchise's first live-action television series, but not its first TV production. The animated Fast & Furious: Spy Racers ran for six seasons on Netflix from 2019 to 2021. The new project occupies a different position: it will be produced by Universal Television and is intended to bring the film brand into Peacock's original programming.

Television and film converge in 2028

The target places the show in the same year as Fast Forever, which is scheduled for a March 17, 2028 theatrical release. The film is being positioned as the conclusion of the main saga, while the television production extends the universe beyond that ending. It remains unclear whether the series will debut before or after the movie, share its characters, or tell a standalone story.

The proximity could support a coordinated handoff from theaters to streaming, but that is an editorial inference, not a confirmed Universal plan. Without a synopsis or cast, there is also no basis for labeling the show a direct sequel, a prequel, or a spinoff focused on a specific character.

The expansion arrives during the 25th anniversary year of the first The Fast and the Furious. NBCUniversal says the films have earned more than $7 billion worldwide. That commercial scale helps explain why the studio intends to keep the property active on television even as it prepares to close the central theatrical storyline.

The next announcements should clarify the episode count, the characters leading the story, and when filming will begin. Until then, the confirmed elements are the series order, its core writing and producing team, and the 2028 premiere target. Everything beyond those points remains open.
